Special Session on Observation and Monitoring of Polar Regions (SS-12)
Please consider to submit an abstract for the Special Session on Observation and Monitoring of Polar Regions (SS-12) at the XXI Congress of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing 3-11 July 2008, Beijing, China

Abstract deadline: November 5, 2007
For more information visit the congress website: http://www.isprs2008-beijing.org/

The goal of the Special session on Observation and Monitoring of Polar Regions is to bring together researchers interested in developing and applying photogrammetry and remote sensing methods for studying polar and alpine regions. Keywords of the session include: International Polar Year (IPY), space and in situ observations, environment, climate change, global warming, mapping.

The quadrennial ISPRS Congress is one of the most important events in the community of photogrammetry, remote sensing and spatial information sciences. It will be hosted by the Chinese Society of Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography, with the theme 'Silk Road for Information from Imagery'.

The scientific program of the Congress will consist of keynote and plenary sessions featuring distinguished scholars, parallel oral and poster sessions presenting the latest developments in a broad range of topics, a users' forum showing successful solutions and new demands from the professional community, and a commercial exhibition demonstrating state-of-the-art equipment and services. The Congress will be the culmination of four years' work of many researchers, scientists, practitioners and administrators working in the fields covered by ISPRS.

Special Session ISPRS WG VIII/8 Polar and Alpine Research
Bea Csatho, bcsatho@buffalo.edu and Toni Schenk, schenk.2@osu.edu, are the conveners of the special ISPRS session Change Detection from Multi-sensor Data in the Arctic Environment. Contributions are invited that address issues related to detecting changes of surfaces or surface properties. Modern sensor data allow accurate surface reconstruction and the subsequent detection of changes during relatively short time intervals. In order to put this short term changes in a broader temporal context, contributions that include older data sources, such as historical terrestrial or aerial photography in the change detection analysis are encouraged. IPY GeoNorth 2007 provides an ideal forum to bring together researchers and scientists from different fields to identify key issues that need to be addressed in order to further our understanding of long term changes in the northern arctic environment. For information on the meeting and abstract submission contact the organizers or visit the conference website (http://ess.nrcan.gc.ca/ipygeonorth). Abstract submission deadline is February 19, 2007.
