IPY, International Polar Year
It is envisioned that the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 will be an
intense, internationally coordinated campaign of research that will initiate
a new era in polar science. IPY 2007-2008 will include research in both polar
regions and recognise the strong links these regions have with the rest of the
globe. It will involve a wide range of research disciplines, including the social
sciences, but the emphasis will be interdisciplinary in its approach and truly
international in participation. It aims to educate and involve the public, and
to help train the next generation of engineers, scientists, and leaders. More

IGARSS, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
IGARSS seeks to advance geoscience and remote sensing science and technology
through scientific, technical and educational activities. The Society strives
to promote a high level of technical excellence among its members by exchange
of information through conferences, meetings, workshops, publications, and through
its committees to provide for the needs of its members. More

IGS, International Glaciological Society
The IGS was founded in 1936 to provide a focus for individuals interested in
practical and scientific aspects of snow and ice. More
…
HMRSC, International Symposium on High Mountain Remote Sensing Cartography
HMRSC is a forum to interchange experiences and to present an overview of the
wide application of the remote sensing techniques to the investigation of the
high mountain regions. More
…
IPA, International Permafrost Association
The IPA, founded in 1983, has as its objectives to foster the dissemination
of knowledge concerning permafrost and to promote cooperation among persons
and national or international organizations engaged in scientific investigation
and engineering work on permafrost. More
…
SCAR, Scientific Commission on Antarctic Research
SCAR is an inter-disciplinary committee of the International
Council for Science (ICSU). It is charged with initiating, developing and
coordinating international scientific research in the Antarctic region, and
on the role of the Antarctic region in the Earth system. More

IASC, International Arctic Science Committee
The International Arctic Science Committee - is a non-governmental organization
whose aim is to encourage and facilitate cooperation in all aspects of arctic
research, in all countries engaged in arctic research and in all areas of the
arctic region. More …
ICSI or IUGG/CCS, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Commission
for the Cryospheric Sciences
ICSI is a commission of International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).
ICSI is concerned with the study of snow and ice in all its forms, that is,
with glaciology. More

WMO, World Meteorological Organization
WMO is the UN system’s authoritative voice on the state and behaviour
of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate
it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources. WMO is a co-sponsor
of IPY. More …
INQUA, International Quaternary Association
INQUA's basic goal is promoting improved communication and international collaboration
in basic and applied aspects of Quaternary research. More

AGU, American Geophysical Union
AGU is a worldwide scientific community that advances, through unselfish cooperation
in research, the understanding of Earth and space for the benefit of humanity
(John, A, Orcutt, President). More …
AGU, Cryosphere Focus Group Cryospheric science studies the portion of the Earth's
surface where water is in a solid form, usually snow or ice. This includes ice
sheets, glaciers, sea ice, freshwater ice, snow, and frozen ground (or permafrost).
The Cryosphere Focus Group acts as a liaison between the cryospheric science
research community and AGU administration. It is a vehicle to promote and strengthen
cryospheric science within AGU, as well as ensure that our needs as a scientific
community are met through AGU Meetings and Publications. More

EGU, The European Geosciences Union
EGU, founded in 2002 as a merger of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and
the European Union of Geosciences (EUG), is a dynamic, innovative, and interdisciplinary
learned association devoted to the promotion of the sciences of the Earth and
its environment and of planetary and space sciences. More

CliC, Climate and Cryosphere
The CliC project was established by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)
in March 2000. In 2004, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR),
became a co-sponsor of the project. CliC addresses the entire cryosphere (i.e.,
snow cover, sea-, lake- and river- ice, glaciers, ice sheets, ice caps and ice
shelves, and frozen ground including permafrost) and its relation to climate.
